As our present hotel is located near the shoreline we ventured down onto the beach this evening. We had a lovely walk and came across an interesting geological formation. Mudstones had been laid down millions of years ago and cracks had developed in them, creating weaker areas that would normally be more prone to erosive attack, leaving large “cobble” like forms on the wave-cut platform - see photo.

These do exist close to the sea but nearer the coastline, where the salt water lies on the slabs in pools and has longer to weather away the flat surface of the centre of the blocks, the perimeters weather less and are left as rims, standing up above the central areas. Fascinating to the geographer!
