8th November (3)

Refreshment was taken at Orewa, where there was some very skilful surfing by a host of young men.

8th November (2)

First stop was at Red Beach, where the colours of the sands and sea were enchanting. The sedimentary rocks were a delight to the geographer in me, especially on the wave-cut platform where the sea had etched out a variety of shapes. The later addition of recent shells to the sides was evident as the tide was out.
Here's Dave, clearly not impressed as he walks away form the landforms!

Left Auckland this morning with the promise of good weather, at least for a day or two. One of the photos posted on the blog recently showed the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and here we are crossing it heading northwards.

A room with a view

Struck lucky with first B and B where we are staying for two nights, on the outskirts of Whangarei. Great place with balcony and superb views over the harbour. Brilliant "landlady" who thoughtfully puts a bottle of white wine in the fridge for all new guests and is full of suggestions of places to visit/eat etc.

On top of that the place has wifi so my predictions of yesterday were wrong and here we are again !
The car hire is a Mazda Demio and looks like it will be a good workhorse over the coming weeks.
